Malaria Risk Map
Hepatitis A Risk Map
  • The vaccine is administered as a 2 dose series with at least a 6 month interval between doses (source)
  • Has been shown to persist for at least 5-12 years after vaccination, but mathematical models indicate that after completion of the vaccination series, anti-HAV will likely persist for 20 years or more (source)
Hepatitis B Risk Map
  • The vaccine is usually administered as a three-dose series on a 0-, 1-, and 6-month schedule. (source)

Japanese Encephalitis

Risk Map

Risk Seasons

  • The chance that a traveler to Asia will get Japanese encephalitis is very small: 1) only certain mosquito species can spread Japanese encephalitis; 2) in areas infested with mosquitoes, only a small portion of the mosquitoes are usually infected with Japanese encephalitis virus; 3) among persons who are infected by a mosquito bite, only 1 in 50 to 1 in 1,000 will develop an illness. As a result, fewer than 1 case per year is reported in U.S. civilians and military personnel traveling to and living in Asia. Only 5 cases among Americans traveling or working in Asia have been reported since 1981. (source)
Typhoid Risk Map
  • Available as Oral and Injection-based vaccine (source)
  • Oral vaccine consists of four capsules, one taken every other day. This regimen should be completed 1 week before potential exposure (source)
Yellow Fever

Risk Map (Africa)

Risk Map (South America)

  • Vaccination should be given 10 days before travel and at 10-year intervals if there is ongoing risk (source)
Meningococcal (Meningitis) Risk Map
  • Vaccination is recommended for persons traveling to the meningitis belt in Africa during the dry season, December through June (source)
  • Approximately 7-10 days are required following vaccination for development of protective levels of anti-meningococcal antibodies (source)
